Library to Benefit at Keeler’s Bay Variety Celebration Sept. 16

Come to Keeler’s Bay Variety (KBV) Store Saturday, September 16 to celebrate their 43rd anniversary and enjoy free food 11 am to 2 pm. While you’re there, get an update on the South Hero Library New Building Campaign. KBV has very generously designated the Library campaign as the beneficiary of any gifts made during the event. You will even be able to add a donation right to your store bill at check out that day.

Members of the Library Board will be on hand to answer questions and explain the plans for the new Library. The architect’s renderings of the new building, as well as the proposed floor plans, will also be on display.

The Library kicked off this public phase of their fundraising campaign on July 22 with an open house on the site of the new Library. The two story building will be sited next to the Community Health Center on Route 2 and close to the highway. This is the same site where the new Fire and Rescue Building is now under construction.

Thanks to the generosity of many people and foundations, the campaign has raised  more than $1.1 million toward the $1.5 million goal. Over $35,000 of this has been pledged since the July campaign kickoff. To date, over 100 individuals, business and foundations have made donations.

The largest donation came first in the form of a $500,000 pledge from Ed Worthen, long-time South Hero resident and educator. In addition to this initial pledge, Ed named the Library as the primary beneficiary of his estate. Sadly, Ed passed away last December, leaving many here in South Hero missing his wit and his friendship. Proceeds from his estate, when they are released by the court, will bring us close to our goal, but we still need to raise at least another $300,000 to make this new building – which Ed passionately advocated for in his lifetime – a reality. Be part of building our new Library in the near future by making a gift or pledge today. There are many ways you can also use your gift to remember or honor someone special to you. Ask one of the Library Board members, go to, stop in the Library, or stop by KBV on Saturday, September 16th for more information.

This is an exciting time for our community, with many essential local services coming together to form a center of activity for all of us. We are grateful to the Horne Family and Keeler’s Bay Variety for the opportunity to share this exciting project with anyone that stops by the store on Saturday and for generously designating the new Library building campaign as the recipients of donations from their anniversary event. For more than 40 years, KBV has been a pillar of our community and thanks to their support, Ed Worthen’s generosity and that of many others, the new Library building hopes to join KBV in this role as a treasured resource for all. It’s just as Ed always liked to say, “And on we go!” Join us in the journey. We hope to see you on the 16th and feel free to contact the Library at 802-372-6209, if you have any questions.
